The design guru, Dietrich Lubs (who worked for Braun with Dieter Rams) helped to create this notebook that comes with an aluminum pen or mechanical pencil conveniently built right into a compartment cut out of the pages - I like this.

...of your unused fireplace.  I've got two empty fireplaces in my new house that are begging to be fed.  Eventually, we'll add gas inserts, but until then, I think I'll fill the void with stacked wood, old books or painted logs (side benefit: preventing Wyatt from climbing up the chimney).

I'm driven by the process of creating my art; the construction and destruction of layers, the addition and subtraction of paper and paint.  The majority of my work is mounted on board, allowing me to scrape and really beat up the surface if I so desire.  My next collection I have planned will be large scale abstractions - I may have some current work for sale (some not pictured above) contact me for details - aleximaczka gmail

From LA to Vancouver, a legacy of inspired living by the pioneers of West Coast Modernist Architecture.

This film is currently in production and I can't find a release date; but I'm hoping I'll get to watch it sometime soon!

From the website:

Intimate interviews and unprecedented access to architects in the film include Barry Downs (Vancouver), Fred Bassetti (Seattle), Hernik Bull (Berkeley), Ray Kappe (LA), Michael Folonis (Santa Monica), Dion Neutra (Los Angeles) -son and partner of Modernist pioneer Richard Neutra- , Barbara Bestor (LA) and others. They will all share their insight into the Modernist Movement, and its relevance in our lives today.

The cakes are made from carvable polyurethane foam and wood; frosted with acrylic media and accessorized with a bunch of random stuff, including taxidermy.  The combination of what appears to be sweet, sticky, pink frosting with fangs and glossy eyeballs is just so fun to look at - I would love to see this show in person.

Mon, 12 Apr 2010 22:40:00 -0700 Beautifully designed Seattle restaurant - Poppy http://artblips.com/beautifully-designed-seattle-restaurant-poppy http://artblips.com/beautifully-designed-seattle-restaurant-poppy

We just bought a new home - it needs new kitchen cabinets - I like these plywood puppies offered by Kerf.  But why am I talking about cabinets anyway?

After eating at Poppy a while back, loving the food and loving the interior design even more, I realized that Kerf (working with Jerry Traunfeld) created the interior.  They worked with Zero Plus Architects to design and build all of the seating, tables, bar, cabinets and the architectural detailing throughout; it's really cool, definitely worth checking out.

Oh, and the food at Poppy is good too. The menu is based on the Indian-inspired Thali — a tray with an array of small dishes meant to be savored solo rather than shared; great for the tapas haters out there.

Mon, 12 Apr 2010 14:52:00 -0700 Designer Plastic Stackable Chairs (inexpensive too) http://artblips.com/designer-plastic-stackable-chairs-inexpensive http://artblips.com/designer-plastic-stackable-chairs-inexpensive

First, the Oh Chair by Karim Rashid - love the organic design and vibrant colors, unfortunately the backside of the chair leaves a bit to be desired; it looks kinda cheap from the back - but still, for only $65 from Umbra, you can own the work of truly revolutionary designer.

Not meant to be a direct comparison to Rashid's chair, this next one is designed by C Öjerstam/M Elebäck for Ikea, and can be had for a measly $39.  I have sat on one of these and it was very sturdy and comfortable; they look great in large numbers -

Oh, and for you stackers out there - these chairs will stack a mile high if you want.

Update:  their not plastic, but here is a great list of chairs under $160 from Remodelista.

Love this concept; sharing 1 collection per day for an entire year.   What a great way to step back from your hectic life and appreciate the smaller things that are often overlooked.

Upon further digging, the artist that created this blog also uploaded a neat photo tour of her home in San Fran; it's fun to get a glimse into the home of other artists -  I'm a collector by nature, but have forced myself to chill until I've got more space to display my treasures.

Dave Muller lives and works in Los Angeles. Find more examples of his work at Blum & Poe & Anthony Meier.

Love the colors and styling of this poster; if I was in Florida right now, I would visit the exhibit titled: Curiosities: Rick Valicenti + the 21st Century Thirst.

Open from February 13 - April 3rd at the Schmidt Center Gallery on Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton campus....It's a retrospective of work from the past decade curated to "underscore the collaborative balance and value between the professional commission and the personal research," says Valicenti.

Spoiler alert: if you're like me and hate spoliers - preserve the surprise, and don't look at the show images linked below

Where is this house?!
The location is stunning and the design of the home itself is truly inspiring.  Not sure how I ran across the site of Bruce Bolander but he's an Architect that knocked my socks off - seriously...when I first saw his portfolio, my shoes popped off and my socks flew across the room.

UPDATE:
the house is in Malibu and as he states on DesignMilk, “The intent of the house was to not interfere with the views any more than was necessary. Its materials are in fact a bit rough and handmade, intentionally so.”

Their product mix includes unique items such as this sugar bowl by Helena Rohner It combines polished stainless steel with white porcelain; an interesting mix: cold with warm, modern with classic...very nice indeed.

Wow, these are pretty. Love the utilitarian design. $495 gets you the pair.

The Ceramic Speakers are made from porcelain, cork, and Baltic birch. The amplifier is made from stainless steel sheet metal, with a cast iron base and wooden volume slider. Aside from the electronic components, plastic is completely avoided in the system’s construction.
